Is Psychotherapy for you?

Exploring the possibility of working with a psychologist is an important step to take.  For some people the very idea of having to share the difficulties they are experiencing with another person can be extremely threatening.

The mind can be a scary place to explore alone, but psychotherapy provides a secure base from which to explore your inner world. The journey of self-reflection in the mindful, interested presence of another person can be very affirming and contribute to personal growth.  Self-discovery is at the heart of therapy.

A good fit between yourself and the therapist is essential, as the therapeutic relationship is based on mutual trust (this may be the very issue some people struggle with) and a sense of safety.  Therapy requires time, money, energy and commitment, thus choosing the right therapist for your specific problem is crucial.

Psychotherapy and dream analysis weren’t founded by Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. What they did was to modernize them with their respective theories, specifically identifying the human unconscious as the source of distressing thoughts, feelings, behavior and human suffering in contrast to earlier beliefs that such maladies were inflicted by the gods.

The Asklepion located at the foot of the Pergamon Acropolis in Bergama, Turkey (Photos above and below) is one of the world's most famous ancient medical centers, built in honour of Asklepios, god of healing. The site in Pergamon was founded in the 4th Century BC on the banks of a sacred spring that still flows today and from which visitors drink. Over the centuries, it became one of the best-known and most important healing centres of the Roman world, second in importance only to Epidaurus in Greece. It was also the world's first psychiatric hospital. Roman emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius, as well as many ordinary people seeking relief from their physical, emotional and mental complaints visited the sacred site.

Treatment included psychotherapy and the interpretations of dreams, which would direct the treatment. The belief that healing was a sacred art and that people’s souls as well as their bodies needed to be mended was espoused.
