Two nights ago, I dreamt of a massive tree with an enormous trunk and widely spread branches that were too high to reach. I wanted to climb it for safety and a higher perspective amidst disruption in the community below, where I wasn’t sure I belonged.
After some image research, I realized it was a Baobab tree—the African Tree of Life and an ancient ancestor. The baobab symbolizes life, wholeness, and unity. Its presence signals a time of coming full circle, inviting us to see the bigger picture, appreciate the wisdom gained through hardships, and share our love and strength with others.
Baobabs are unlike any other trees on earth in all they provide. These living ecosystems have offered shelter, sustenance, and spiritual connection for centuries. Known for their resilience and endurance, baobabs can store water in their trunks, regenerate bark, and live for thousands of years. When they finally die, they seem to vanish, collapsing in on themselves and leaving little trace. They are the oldest living flowering plants in the world. Baobabs are symbols of humanity’s shared origins and our interconnectedness with nature. The Venda people call the baobab "the tree that roars" because of the sound the wind makes as it moves through its branches.
‘Kremetart’ is the Afrikaans name for the Baobab tree, which is also my mother tongue. I grew up in a small town called Kremetart, a suburb of Giyani located in the heart of the Limpopo Bushveld, near Kruger National Park in northern South Africa. I remember once, as a child, visiting one of these majestic giants.
Why such a dream now? The world is in a state of disarray, and humanity is grappling with opposing forces—restriction and expansion—that are shaping our worldviews and behaviors. On one side, there are constraints, limitations, and fear-driven decisions rooted in the uncertainty surrounding the exponential changes we are witnessing. On the other, there is an equally powerful longing for freedom, growth, and boundless possibilities. These polarities mirror the internal and external struggles we face as we seek balance amidst shifting societal, environmental, and cultural landscapes.
In the dream, the tree may symbolize refuge and higher perspective, offering clarity and stability amid this collective chaos. Climbing it could represent the quest for safety, truth, or a broader understanding of life’s challenges and opportunities. It may also be an invitation to rise above the confusion and recognize our connection with nature and one another—a call for unity and understanding in a time of profound division.
