Gaslighting - A Trickster God's Manipulation

Jungian Analyst, Psychotherapist & Clinical Psychologist.

Gaslighting - the psychological manipulation that causes individuals to doubt their own perceptions - is often linked to deception, denial, and power dynamics. In mythology, the Trickster archetype embodies this shadow aspect, distorting reality to serve its own ends. A striking example comes from Norse mythology: Loki and the death of Balder.

Loki, one of the most complex figures in Norse lore, embodies both trickster energy and chaos, using manipulation, deceit, and illusion to disrupt order. His actions remind us that truth can be twisted, and reality is often more fragile than it seems.

Balder, the radiant god of light, was beloved by all. His mother, Frigg, secured oaths from every object in existence never to harm him - except mistletoe, which she deemed too insignificant. Convinced of his invulnerability, the gods playfully hurled weapons at Balder, watching them bounce off harmlessly.

Loki saw an opportunity. Rather than attacking Balder directly, he manipulated another. He fashioned a mistletoe arrow, handed it to Höðr, Balder’s blind brother, and urged him to join the game, pretending to help. Unaware of the danger, Höðr released the arrow, killing Balder.

As the gods reeled in grief, Loki feigned innocence, distancing himself from responsibility, shifting blame. He did not lie outright - he led another to unknowingly enact his will, maintaining the illusion of harmlessness. There was no direct proof of malicious intent.

This myth highlights a key aspect of gaslighting: psychological coercion through distorted truth and plausible deniability—denying responsibility by ensuring no clear evidence links the manipulator to the act. It allows tricksters - even leaders - to evade blame by creating uncertainty or distance from their actions.

Recognizing these patterns helps us identify gaslighting, where truth is twisted, accountability is evaded, and reality is rewritten. The shadow Trickster still walks among us, shaping perceptions of reality.
